Safely Running For Weight Loss

By Jacquie Cattanach

Were you aware that running is actually one of the top ways to lose weight? Yes, there are other ways to shed some pounds, but if you want to look at what is most effective, running is going to be the route that you want to go. There are very few other methods that compare to running. If you think this is going to be easy then you should think again. You are going to have to have a lot of self discipline and commitment, so get prepared. Below I am going to put a few important tips that can help you as you begin to run for weight loss.

Talk To A Doctor

It's a good idea to visit your doctor for a full check up before you start running. This assumes more importance if you have been inactive, are overweight, have heart problems or other health issues. In any case, getting a clean bill of health from your doctor is a good idea if only because it will help you identify any potential problems before they occur.

Buy A Good Pair Of Running Shoes

Finding good running shoes is very important. Shoes, not only protect your feet, but also support them when you run. Running shoes are not the same as other shoes, and will have extra cushioning to absorb the impact of each stride. Running shoes should also be just tight enough to support your feet without being uncomfortable. Make sure that you get runners that do all this, or you could stop running even before you have begun.

Do A Proper Warm Up

Another thing that you need to remember when it comes to running is warming up. A good warm up will allow you to reduce the wear and tear that comes on your joints, muscles and tendons and this will limber them up. When you're limber this will help you to settle into your rhythm quicker. If you don't warm up and you start to jog, you could end up with injuries.

My advice is that you start with a brisk walk of about five minutes before you run, jog slowly for about another ten minutes and then stop and do some stretching. This will allow your body to be at its best temperature to start running with ease.

Don't Go On A Diet When You Run

Even if you main reason for running is to shed some weight, you shouldn't diet when you begin to run. A good option is to eat healthy foods and cut down on those junk foods and snacks.

Take Time To Relax

This is another important aspect behind running. Correct posture is important, not only because it will help you run better, but because it will help you relax the rest of your body when you run. Hold yourself erect and look ahead. Don't look down or lean forward. Relax your shoulders and arms and try not to clench your fists.

Intake More Water

Many people will use fluids other than water, but water is the best at hydrating and reviving you. As you run you will sweat and this means that the water in your body leaves and you could get dehydrated. Make sure that you drink your water at least an hour before and then after you run. It is also important that you keep drinking water as the day goes on.

Include Strength Training as Part of Your Regimen

While strength training is not exactly a part of running, it will help you to build your muscle mass and burn off some of those pesky fat rolls. This is a long term plan though because your muscle mass will take longer to build than losing inches.

Adding running to your exercise routine is a great way to keep your weight in check or lose some of those extra pounds that have been hanging around. But your goal is to lose weight through running, it's important not to jump right into a running routine without considering the above important details first.
