Diamond Rings - How The 4 C Evaluation System Works

By Mark Walters

If you are purchasing a diamond ring, you should definitely know what to look for before you make the decision on which one to buy. You want the ring to be both beautiful and good value for the money that you have budgeted. As we all know, the bigger the diamond, the bigger the price. This is the first C - carat weight. But there are other factors that influence the price of a diamond stone. These are known as the other 3 C's. They are color, clarity, and cut.

The 1st C, carat weight, is how diamonds are measured. One carat is equal to .2 g. Carats can be further divided into points. There are 100 points in each carat. So a quarter carat diamond can also be referred to as a 25 point diamond and a half carat diamond is sometimes referred to as a 50 point diamond. The carat weight of the diamond along with the other 3 C's will play a large role in determining the price of the style.

One of the most flexible areas that you have when choosing a diamond is the 2nd C, color. Many people find that they are willing to go with the diamond that is not quite as colorless as they originally thought in exchange for a larger size. The most expensive diamonds are either the fancy colors such as yellow, red, and pink, or the colorless diamonds. Either way, it is unusual to see these in a retail setting. Diamond color is rated on a letter scale from D to Z. The closer to D the diamond is the less color it has.

The 3rd C, clarity, is another one that is subject to personal taste. While most people will find it unacceptable to have a large black dot in the center of their diamond, small inclusions are often acceptable and sometimes even hidden by the cut. The clearer the diamond the more expensive it gets. When it comes to clarity, the main thing you want to look for is the sparkle of the diamond and if you find the inclusion will annoy you. If you like the way it sparkles, and the inclusion is not big, then you can get a lot of value for your money by accepting a diamond with an inclusion.

A round shaped diamond is considered the ideal cut for a diamond. It yields the best sparkle and brilliance. However, if you prefer a marquis, or an emerald cut, or even a princess cut, then go with that. The cut of your diamond should be a very personal choice. Do not let the salesperson talk you into something you don't like. You will be wearing this piece of jewelry for a long time, so it pays to really enjoy it.

What ever 4 C's you end up getting in your diamond, be sure of one thing - that you really enjoy and like the diamond that you purchase. Diamonds are one of natures most beautiful creations, and whether you get a necklace or a ring it is sure to give you much pleasure if you enjoy the setting and the piece.
