The Citrine History

By John S Stewart

The French word meaning yellow, or "Citron", is from where the word Citrine was derived. All Citrine Jewellery including; Citrine Earrings, Citrine Rings and Citrine Pendants, show all the superb yellow colours that are produced by tiny amounts of iron oxide that is trapped inside silica crystals. The "Sunny" yellow colours and deep red "Madeira" tones help the transition from Autumns last days, through to the dull days of November.

Citrine is closely related to the gemstone amethyst due to its close habitat in the rock crystals within the earths crust. It was also once thought to be a form of topaz, and was so then known as "Topaz Quartz". Throughout the passage of time, many cultures have believed it to fight off suicidal and other evil thoughts, plague, bad skin problems, treat depression, and prevent snake and other poisonous creatures from attack. It was known to enhance creativity. It is also the monthly birthstone for November.

Citrines were thought to offer peace and clarity of the mind, doctors of the times used it to treat diabetes, constipation and digestive disorders, and remove poisons and toxins from the body.

Around the times of Helen of Troy, approximately a few hundred years before the birth of Christ, the Greeks first recorded the use of citrines in jewellery making. A few hundred years AD, was when the Romans started to make various jewellery designs containing citrine stones. These civilizations christened the citrine as being the "Merchants Stone", because if a citrine was placed in with the monies that a business had made, then that business would never fail and always remain profitable. Citrines were thought to make you smile more...no wonder because they also were thought to even increase the profits of businesses while they sat in with the monies made!

Citrine is a much cheaper alternative to the more expensive diamond and sapphire gemstones when searching for gemstones of yellow hues origins. They can provide beautiful "sunny" yellows through to rich "Madeira" reds.

Historically, it has been found in Spain, on the Scottish island of Arran, in France, Hungary and in several African mines, Russian mountains and Afghanistan. But the best mines have been historically found in Brazil and Uruguay. In Europe, the boom on these yellow to reddish crystal quartz gems didn't begin until around the 1930's from mines in Brazil and Uruguay.

The yellow topaz was the only other cheaper alternative found to the yellow colours of sapphires and diamonds up until this time around the beginning of the 1930's. Terms that described topaz such as "gold topaz" and "smokey topaz", were in fact actually describing citrines. all through history the gemstone that has probably been described and labeled as something else more than any other, is the citrine. Today some collectors are still being told that their gemstones that they think are "smokey" or "gold" topaz, are really citrine!
