How To Choose The Right Evening Gown For The Right Occasion

By Florian Jackson

Each woman needs to feel beautiful always. She may be the head of the household, the top honcho in an office, a top mechanic and accountant at the same time, or even the top of her class, but when the situation calls for it, she can appear and feel as feminine as she is. Donning an elegant evening gown during formal affairs is one of those times. And as few as the events come, she needs to feel at her best always.

What a woman dons can either make her feel assured or awkward. During formal assemblies when she needs to shine out, her evening dress should make her feel gorgeous and at her most exquisite.

In choosing the perfect evening dress for each woman, there are a few guidelines you must follow. It is almost impossible to go wrong with the classic little black dress, but a little variety and color won't hurt also.

The first thing you need to keep in mind is that not all evening dresses are proper for each formal function. Some events specifically ask their guests to wear certain colors, while some call for more conservative style than others. Say the party is your grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary. Pass over the sexily-cut dresses and just go for chic and elegant without flaunting too much skin. The same goes for other family events or for company-organized formal functions.

For budget-conscious and practical women, it is certainly okay to get a ready-made as opposed to made-to-order. Go to specialty shops or online boutiques to look for your perfect design. And to make it a perfect fit, make sure you have it altered. Wearing a poor-fitting gown would just make you feel frumpy.

We all have different body forms and sizes. If a gown looks good on Heidi Klum, it may look a little dull on you. Some girls look good in long, balloon-skirt dresses, while some are pretty in short, empire-cut gowns. What looks good on others may not look good on you. Know your body's best features and stress it. Still, there are dresses that are designed to make even your least fine part look great.

Also, the color of the gown can make or break the whole effect. Pick the gown that best complements your skin tone. Your fair coloring may look pasty in certain shades. There are also colors that commonly look fine, but appear tacky during certain events. Yellow looks too attention-getting in a black-and-white affair. Also, black and red lace together can look tasteless on some styles.
