Introduction To Diamonds History

Introduction To Diamonds

The word "diamond", as in Diamond Jewellery, such as Diamond Rings, Diamond Earrings and Diamond Pendants, means "unbreakable" or (adamas) in Ancient Greek, and is from where the term originates. Diamonds have been known to definitely exist in India 3000 years ago, but probably for up to 6000 years, where they where first found along the banks of the Rivers Penner, Krishna and Godavari.

Scientists proved that diamonds were solely made up of carbon in 1772.

In the year of 1772, researchers determined that diamonds were solely made up from the chemical carbon.

After this time at around the start of the 19th Century, the popularity of diamonds increased markedly due to greater supplies, better cutting and polishing preparation techniques, and also due to the increased wealth that many countries started to find.

During the 20th Century the most recognised diamond grading systems was introduced by the GIA - Gemological Institute of America. They basically determined the trade of specific diamonds by how light travelled through it and how the light was dispersed or refracted.

Before a diamond is cut and polished, it can be determined by its structure from where in the world it originates. After it has been prepared, it is virtually impossible to say from where it came.

A large diamond that has no flaws present in its make-up, is called a "paragon".

Diamonds are the hardest minerals found, with a Moh's scale reading of 10.

Diamond Early History

During the very early days of diamonds history, across India they were commonly used to protect people during battle and to drive away any evil spirits.

Dark Age Diamond History

As was the case with many gemstones, the diamond was also used in medicine. A diamond was thought to heal wounds and cure illnesses, and if ingested, sickness.

Diamonds In The Middle Ages

Nations started to treat the diamond as a precious gemstone and understand its true worth. The previous legends and beliefs were starting to fade as they become precious and supply and demand increased.

Some giant examples in this period gave rise to even greater popularity, and their demand increased massively from this.

As the demand kept ever increasing the supply from India obviously diminished, and for a short time was taken on by mines in Brazil and Borneo, before the "Great Diamond Rush" occurred after they were located on the banks of the River Orange in South Africa.

Recent Diamond History

Around the middle of the 19th Century large deposits of diamonds were located in Australia, but their real worth in possible supplying numbers was not properly understood until the 1970's.

Today diamonds are mined in many Countries, but primarily in Botswana, Russia, Canada, South Africa and Australia. They are also being regularly found in many other African Countries.
